On CELPIP, your score level is your CLB level. Each skill is reported from M and 1 through 12, and that number is the Canadian Language Benchmark directly, so there is nothing to convert. If you score CELPIP 9 in Speaking, that is CLB 9 in Speaking. The charts below show what each level means, and how many correct answers Reading and Listening need to reach it.
CELPIP score comparison chart (all four skills)
This is the master CELPIP score chart. It applies to Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking alike, because all four are reported on the same 1 to 12 scale with the same descriptors.

Because the scale is shared, a single CELPIP score chart covers the whole test. What differs between skills is how the level is decided, and that is where most of the confusion starts.
CELPIP Reading and Listening score chart (raw score to CLB)
Reading and Listening are marked, not judged. Each has 38 scored questions, there is no penalty for a wrong answer, and your raw score out of 38 converts to a level. The two skills use slightly different conversions, so here they are side by side.

An honest caveat. Paragon's own published ranges overlap, because the exact raw-to-level mapping varies slightly from one test form to another. We resolve those overlaps into the single non-overlapping table above so a calculator can return one answer, and our practice tests score against exactly this table. Treat it as a close estimate, not a promise.

CELPIP Writing score chart
There is no raw score for Writing, so any chart promising "X correct answers equals band 9" is inventing it. There is nothing to count. Trained raters read both of your responses and award a level from 1 to 12 against four official criteria, and that level is your CLB directly.

Each criterion is scored 1 to 12 and the four are combined into the single Writing level on your report. That combination is why a well argued email with weak grammar rarely lands above the middle bands: Readability pulls the other three down with it.
The band names below are Paragon's. The plain English summaries are ours, written from the criteria above to be useful when you reread your own draft. They are a study aid, not official CLB descriptors.

CELPIP Writing is 2 tasks: an email of 150 to 200 words, and a survey response of 150 to 200 words. Both are rated on the same four criteria and both feed the one reported level, so a strong Task 1 does not rescue an unfinished Task 2. Task Fulfilment is the criterion candidates lose most often, and almost always for the same two reasons: a bullet from the prompt was never answered, or the register was wrong for the person being written to.

CELPIP Speaking score chart
Speaking works the same way and has no raw score either. The criteria are almost identical, with one deliberate difference.

Writing is judged on Readability, Speaking on Listenability. Everything else matches, including the 1 to 12 scale and the band names in the table above. Because neither skill has anything to count, both improve by studying what a rater rewards rather than by drilling more questions. How the overall CELPIP score is calculated
CELPIP does not blend your skills into one headline number the way some tests do. Your result shows a level for each skill, and the overall or average score is simply the mean of those levels.

Both candidates average 9, but they are not equivalent for immigration. Most programs look at each skill separately and effectively judge you on your weakest one, so Candidate B's Writing 7 could cost real points despite the same average. For CELPIP-General LS, only Listening and Speaking are reported, so only those two count.

CELPIP score chart for PR and citizenship
This is the reason most people look up a CELPIP score chart at all. Here are the levels that usually matter, though requirements change and vary by program.

The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is the one worth fighting for, because it unlocks the highest language points and the additional points for strong language combined with education or experience. On Reading that means moving from about 28 to 30 correct up to 31 or 32, and on Listening from about 30 to 32 up to 33 or 34. Framed that way, CLB 9 is often only a handful of questions away.

CELPIP is no longer a Canada-only test. On 7 August 2025 Australia's Department of Home Affairs added CELPIP-General to the list of English tests approved for Australian visa purposes, alongside IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, C1 Advanced, LANGUAGECERT Academic and the Michigan English Test. Most CELPIP guides still say Australia does not accept it, and they are out of date.
Australia does not use CLB. It sorts applicants into five named English levels, and it sets the CELPIP requirement per skill, not as an average. These are the levels published by Home Affairs for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025.

The part worth staring at is the Writing column. Competent English is a flat 7 across all four skills, but from Proficient upwards Writing is the binding skill: Proficient needs Writing 10 while Reading and Speaking only need 8, and Superior needs Writing 12, the very top of the CELPIP scale, while the other three need 10. Anyone treating the Australian bands as flat, the way the Canadian CLB minimums usually are, will under-prepare Writing by two levels. Two rules catch people out, and both are stated plainly by Home Affairs:

One wording note, because the tables differ in shape. For Functional English the department asks for "an overall band score of at least 5", while every other level is set per component. CELPIP reports a level for each skill and does not print a single overall number on the score report, so if Functional English is the bar you need, confirm with the department how they want that evidenced. Requirements also vary by visa subclass, and Home Affairs is the only authority on them. Check the eligibility page for the visa you are applying for.
How CELPIP levels compare to IELTS
If you are still choosing a test, the comparison matters. CELPIP levels map straight to CLB, while IELTS bands must be converted. For example, CLB 9 is CELPIP 9 in every skill, but on IELTS it means Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0. What is a good CELPIP Writing score?

What is Level M on the CELPIP score chart?
