What is on this listening test?

Part 1, Listening to Problem Solving is a woman who has not filed a tax return for two years and the volunteer helping her at a free tax clinic. It arrives in three audio sections with questions after each.

Part 2, Daily Life Conversation is two friends in the wax hut at a cross-country ski trailhead outside the city, on a borrowed budget for skate skis.

Part 3, Listening for Information is a man who has inherited a lakeside camp north of the city and the septic inspector he has hired, which is the classic Part 3 shape: one person has the expertise and the other has the questions.

Part 4, Listening to a News Item is a single voice on a milestone reached by the city tree planting programme.

Part 5, Listening to a Discussion is Rosaire, Etienne and Sylvie on the board of a francophone cultural centre, arguing about a theatre season that does not pay for itself.

Part 6, Listening for Viewpoints is a prepared talk at a public meeting about what it actually costs to close a mine, and it is the longest and hardest clip on the test.

Two engines, not one

Parts 1 to 3 speak the question to you after the clip, one at a time, thirty seconds each, in a fixed order. Parts 4 to 6 print every question in the part on one screen as a sentence with a gap, with one budget for the whole screen and no fixed order. Guess early in the first group, because the thirty seconds is spent either way. Take the certain ones first in the second group.

How this test is scored

Marked, not judged. You are scored on submit against the answer key, with the reason for each answer and review mode to replay the clips with their transcripts. The CELPIP listening score chart converts the raw score out of 38.

Tips for this test

  • In Part 1, the three sections run as a sequence. Answer each set of questions as it comes, because the earlier ones close before the later detail arrives.
  • In Part 3, label every number with what it measures. A figure with no label is worthless to a sentence completion.
  • Set up three lines of notes before Part 5. Rosaire, Etienne and Sylvie do not agree, and the questions ask who wanted what.
  • In Part 6, follow the argument rather than the terminology.
  • Never leave a gap empty. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer.
