CELPIP Listening Mock Test 14
The first of the hard listening tests in this set. Same six parts and same 38 questions, but the speakers qualify more, correct themselves more, and put the decisive fact at the end of a sentence rather than the start.
Listening Mock Test 14 is rated Hard and set in St. John's. What makes it hard is arithmetic and hedging: several clips turn on a number that is only meaningful once you have caught the unit or the period attached to it.
What is on this listening test?
Part 1, Listening to Problem Solving is a broker and a man whose home insurance policy has come back changed because of an oil tank, in an insurance office, across three audio sections with questions after each.
Part 2, Daily Life Conversation is two colleagues walking the harbourfront at lunchtime, the day before one of them flies offshore for a fortnight.
Part 3, Listening for Information is a woman who sells preserves at markets talking to an environmental health officer about what would be needed to sell from her own kitchen.
Part 4, Listening to a News Item is a single voice on a church building on the south side of the harbour that is becoming an archive.
Part 5, Listening to a Discussion is Fergus, Josie and Gladys, three councillors of a small Newfoundland town, weighing an offer to join their water system to the one in the next town.
Part 6, Listening for Viewpoints is a prepared talk to a regional council on the cost of serving small and scattered communities, and it is the hardest clip here.

What makes this one hard
Three things. The insurance clip gives conditions in a specific order and the order matters. The health officer in Part 3 answers with requirements rather than yes or no, so the sentence completions want the requirement and not the verdict. And the Part 5 councillors are weighing a one-time cost against a recurring one, which means a number quoted per year and a number quoted once are both in the audio and are not comparable as heard.

Tips for this test
- Write the unit next to every number. Per year, one time, per household. This test punishes an unlabelled figure more than any other in the set.
- In Part 1, listen for what the insurer requires rather than what it refuses. The requirement is the answer.
- In Part 3, the officer never simply says no. Catch the condition under which the answer becomes yes.
- Before Part 5, write Fergus, Josie and Gladys down. Two of them shift position during the discussion.
- Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so guess anything you cannot resolve.
