How the CELPIP Reading score is calculated

The CELPIP Reading Test has 38 scored questions spread across four parts (Correspondence, Apply a Diagram, For Information, and For Viewpoints). Every correct answer is worth one mark, and there is no deduction for a wrong answer, so your raw score is simply the count of questions you got right, from 0 to 38. That raw score is then mapped to a CELPIP level, reported on a scale from M (the lowest) through 1 to 12, which lines up with the Canadian Language Benchmarks. On the real Reading Test the difficulty is spread across the four parts, and there is no penalty for a wrong answer, so you should answer every one of the 38 questions even when you are unsure. How many correct answers do you need for CLB 7 and CLB 9?

CLB 7 to 9 is the band most permanent residence applicants target, because each level up earns more points in programs like Express Entry. Use the second calculator to see the exact minimum for your goal, but the pattern is worth understanding: the jump from CLB 6 to 7 is where many candidates plateau, and every level above 9 leaves almost no room for error. Because the higher bands need you to miss only a few questions, the difference between a good score and the score your application needs usually comes down to accuracy on the two or three hardest items in each part, not raw reading speed. If you are close to a target and keep landing one band below it, that is a sign to slow down on the trickier questions rather than rush to finish.

Why the numbers shift slightly between test forms

You may notice that a friend reached the same level with a different number of correct answers, or that two charts online disagree by a mark or two. That is expected. A slightly harder form needs a slightly lower raw score for the same level, and an easier form needs a slightly higher one. • Answer every question. With no penalty for a wrong answer, a blank is a guaranteed zero. Guess on anything you cannot finish.
• Practise by part. Find which of the four parts costs you the most marks, then drill that part until it stops being the weak link.
