CELPIP reading tips and tricks: Part 3, Reading for Information
Nine statements, four paragraphs, and a fifth option that means the fact is not there at all. These are the CELPIP reading tips that actually change your Part 3 score: read the statement before the paragraph, never match keywords, and learn to reach E on purpose rather than in a panic.
What Reading for Information actually asks of you
Part 3 hands you one informational passage, the kind of thing you might meet in a magazine or an encyclopaedia entry, chopped into four paragraphs and labelled A, B, C and D. On the right sit nine statements. For each one you decide which paragraph contains that information. There is a fifth option, E, and it means the information is in none of them.
So Part 3 is not a comprehension task in the usual sense. Nobody asks what the passage means, what the author thinks, or what you can conclude. It asks one question nine times: where is this? That sounds mechanical, and it would be, except that the statements never use the paragraph's words. A paragraph that says seed lies dormant on the bottom through the winter becomes a statement about a bed surviving a bad season, sharing not one word with its own answer.
That paraphrasing is what makes option E dangerous rather than merely present. E is not a rare curiosity. It is deliberately built so that the statement's topic is unmistakably in one of the paragraphs while the specific fact is not, which produces a paragraph that feels almost right. You look at D, you see restoration programs, the statement is about restoration programs, and you tick D without noticing that the number the statement asks for was never printed.
One more structural fact, and it is the one that separates Part 3 from Part 1: there is no order rule. The statements do not walk down the passage. A statement about paragraph D can sit above a statement about paragraph A, and two consecutive statements can point at the same paragraph. Every one has to be settled on its own merits, which is why the order in which you read things matters so much here.

How to attack the information part
Part 3 is the part where the order of your own actions decides your score. Read in the wrong sequence and you will do twice the work for worse results.
- Map, do not read
- Give the passage about one minute and come away with four labels, not four summaries. "A is the plant. B is the traditional harvest. C is the commercial history. D is the threats and the fixes." That map is all you need, and building anything more detailed is time you will not get back.
- Statement first, always
- Read the statement, work out what fact it is actually asking for, and only then go to the passage. This is the single highest-value habit in Part 3. Reading paragraphs closely before you know the target means holding four paragraphs of detail in your head against nine unknown questions, which nobody can do.
- Translate before you scan
- "A feature of the seed that lets a bed recover from a bad year" is asking about seed that survives to next season. Say the underlying fact in your own plain words first. The statement was written to avoid the paragraph's vocabulary, so scanning for its words finds either nothing or the wrong paragraph.
- Never ride an order
- There is no sequence to lean on, and expecting one is actively harmful. If you have answered A, A, B, B and the next statement smells like C, that pattern is telling you nothing. Two statements in a row often share a paragraph, and answers routinely jump backwards.
- Earn your E
- Choose E only after you have looked in all four paragraphs for the specific fact and found the topic without the fact. E is a conclusion, not an escape. Equally, refusing to use E and forcing a match onto the nearest topical paragraph is how the part is designed to beat you.
The E rule deserves unpacking, because candidates fail it in both directions and the two failures look nothing alike. The first is the forced match. The statement asks how many communities run the restoration programs, paragraph D is visibly about the restoration programs, and the pull toward D is almost physical. You are not matching the fact, you are matching the subject, and E is sitting there precisely to collect people who do that.
The second failure is treating E as a bin. A statement resists you, the minute is nearly gone, and E feels like a dignified way to lose. It is not. In a normal set only one of the nine statements is genuinely absent from the passage, so an E chosen out of fatigue is very likely wrong, and it is wrong in a way that also costs you the correct answer you would have found with fifteen more seconds. The discipline is symmetrical: search all four before you say E, and say E without flinching once you have.
A Part 3 passage, taken apart
Four paragraphs, four statements, and the reasoning for all five options on each one: why the right paragraph is right, and why each of the other three, and E, was made to pull.
Manoomin: the wild rice of the Great Lakes
Manoomin is an annual aquatic grass, unrelated to the rice grown in Asia, and it lives in shallow slow-moving water between roughly half a metre and a metre and a half deep. It spends part of the summer with its leaves lying flat on the surface before the stalk stands up and flowers. The grain ripens in late summer and shatters, meaning it simply drops from the stalk into the water, where it lies dormant on the bottom through the winter. Because a bed carries several years of seed in the mud beneath it, one failed summer does not empty it. The plant is unforgiving about water depth, however, and a change of a few centimetres at the wrong week can wipe out a season.
The oldest harvest is done from a canoe by two people. One poles the boat slowly through the stand while the other uses a pair of cedar sticks, called knockers, to bend the stalks over the gunwale and tap the ripe grain loose so that it falls into the hull. Much of it misses and falls into the water instead, which is the point: the method reseeds the bed as it works. Beds ripen unevenly, so the same water is visited three or four times across a fortnight rather than stripped in a day. For Anishinaabe communities the harvest is both a legal right and a practice with its own protocols, and the grain that comes home is still parched over a fire, trodden and winnowed before anyone eats it.
In the 1950s researchers in Minnesota began breeding plants whose grain does not shatter but holds on to the stalk until it is cut. That single alteration is what made machinery possible: a crop that waits can be taken by a combine, and a combine needs a diked paddy rather than a lake. Cultivation spread, and most of the world's crop is now grown in paddies in California. The price fell steeply, hand-harvested lake grain became a premium product sold at several times the paddy price, and the change remains contested, not least because paddy grain and lake grain are sold to shoppers under the same name.
The beds face a crowded list of threats. Dams hold water at levels chosen for power generation and flood control rather than for a plant that measures its tolerance in centimetres. Sulphate carried off mine sites appears to interfere with the seedlings. Introduced carp uproot young plants while feeding. Heavier spring rain drowns the stand at the floating-leaf stage, when it is least able to cope. Against all this, restoration seeding programs now run jointly between First Nations and provincial agencies, with results that are honestly mixed: some beds have come back within five years, and others have simply refused.

A feature of the seed that allows a bed to survive a bad season.
"It lies dormant on the bottom through the winter. Because a bed carries several years of seed in the mud beneath it, one failed summer does not empty it." The statement asks for a property of the seed, and A gives one: it banks. Note that the statement shares almost no vocabulary with the sentence that answers it, which is the norm here.
B is entirely about seed staying in the water so that the bed reseeds itself, so "a bed surviving" is genuinely B's business too. The difference is in the statement's first four words: a feature of the seed. B's mechanism is a human decision about how to swing a stick. Same outcome, different cause.
The sharpest of the wrong paragraphs, because C really does describe a feature of the seed: grain bred not to shatter. It is a seed characteristic, in a paragraph, being discussed. It is simply not about surviving a bad season; it is about being harvestable by machine, and it is an engineered trait rather than a natural one.
D is the paragraph about beds recovering: "some beds have come back within five years". Recovery is D's actual subject, so a reader scanning for the idea of a bed bouncing back lands here. But D's recovery is a seeding program run by agencies, not anything the seed does by itself.
The fact is present and plainly stated in A. E is only for information that appears in none of the four, and three paragraphs having a plausible claim on the topic is not a reason to conclude the fact is missing.
A way of gathering the crop that ensures some of it is never taken.
"Much of it misses and falls into the water instead, which is the point: the method reseeds the bed as it works." The four-visit rhythm across a fortnight says the same thing again. The statement wants a gathering method with deliberate loss built in, and B is the only paragraph describing a method at all.
A also has grain falling into the water, in almost the same words: the grain "shatters, meaning it simply drops from the stalk into the water". A keyword scan for grain reaching the water finds A before B. But in A nobody is gathering anything. It is the plant doing what plants do.
C is about harvesting too, at length, which makes it a real candidate for a statement containing the word crop. It describes the opposite arrangement: grain bred to hold on to the stalk so a combine can take all of it. Same topic, inverted content.
Threats and restoration. Nothing is harvested anywhere in D. The weakest pull of the four, which is worth noticing: not every wrong paragraph is a serious contender, and spotting the dead ones fast is where your minute comes from.
Given, explicitly, in B, and flagged with "which is the point" in case you missed it.
A deliberate change to the plant that made machinery practical.
"Researchers began breeding plants whose grain does not shatter ... That single alteration is what made machinery possible." Deliberate, a change to the plant, and machinery: all three parts of the statement land in one sentence.
A is the paragraph about what the plant is and does, and it is where shattering is first explained. If you have half-remembered the word shatter and go looking for it, A is where you find it. But A's shattering is what the plant does naturally, nobody changed anything, and machines are never mentioned.
Two people, a canoe and two cedar sticks. B is the antithesis of machinery, which is precisely why some readers pick it: the statement contains the word machinery, and B is the paragraph where you consciously thought about machinery being absent.
D contains deliberate human intervention in the plant's life, in the form of restoration seeding programs. So "a deliberate change" has a home here. It has nothing to do with machinery, and seeding a bed is not a change to the plant itself.
Given in C, in a sentence that even announces its own significance.

Go and look for the number. D names the programs, says who runs them jointly, and reports what happened to the beds. It never counts anybody. Every piece of furniture around the fact is in place and the fact itself was never printed, which is how a well-made E is always built.
D is the right paragraph for the topic. If the number existed, it would be in D, and nowhere else. That is the entire trick: the pull you feel toward D is real and correct as far as it goes, and it goes exactly one step short. Matching the subject is not matching the fact. Ask yourself what specific thing the statement wants, then look for that thing rather than for the area it lives in.
No restoration, no programs and no communities counted in any of them. B mentions Anishinaabe communities, which is the one place the word community appears, so a keyword scan can land there. B is about a harvest, not a seeding program, and it counts nothing either.
Before you commit to any paragraph, name the specific fact in three or four words. Here it is "how many communities". Then go and try to find those words' meaning on the page. If the topic is there and the meaning is not, that is E, and you can pick it in full confidence rather than as a shrug.
Common mistakes in Reading Part 3
Paragraph matching looks like the simplest task in the section, and it fails people in six reliable ways.
Matching the topic instead of the fact
The defining Part 3 error and the reason E exists. The statement is about restoration, paragraph D is about restoration, so D wins. Nobody checked whether D actually contains the specific thing the statement asked for.
Reading the passage before the statements
It feels responsible and it costs you three minutes. Four paragraphs of detail cannot be held in memory against nine questions you have not seen. Map the topics, then let each statement send you back.
Scanning for the statement's words
The statement was written to avoid its own paragraph's vocabulary. Worse, a word from the statement often does appear somewhere, in the wrong paragraph, sitting there for exactly this purpose. Community appears in B and answers nothing.
Refusing to choose E
E feels like admitting defeat, so candidates force the statement onto the nearest topical paragraph and lose a mark they had earned. If you have searched all four for the specific fact and it is not there, E is the right answer and it is worth exactly the same as any other.
Using E as a bin
The opposite failure, and just as expensive. In a normal set only one statement of the nine is genuinely absent. An E chosen because the minute ran out is probably wrong, and it costs you the answer you were fifteen seconds away from.
Expecting an order
Part 1 rewards riding the order. Part 3 punishes it. A statement about D can sit above a statement about A, consecutive statements can share a paragraph, and a run of answers tells you nothing whatsoever about the next one.

A second original passage. Map the four paragraphs, then take each statement in turn, name the specific fact it wants, and commit to a letter before you reveal anything.
The prairie grain elevator
A wooden grain elevator is a tall cribbed box standing beside a rail siding, and everything about it follows from one idea: lift the grain once and let gravity do the rest. A farmer's wagon tips into a pit in the floor, and a leg, which is a moving belt fitted with cups, carries the grain to the peak of the building. From there it drops into whichever bin the operator has chosen, and later drops again into a rail car. A typical house held about thirty thousand bushels. The outside was painted in the colours of whichever company owned it, with the name of the town lettered across the side, and on most of the prairie it was the only vertical thing for many kilometres.
They arrived with the railways in the 1880s and multiplied along every branch line, spaced roughly thirteen kilometres apart, which was as far as a loaded team of horses could travel and return between dawn and dusk. By 1933 there were close to six thousand of them standing across the three prairie provinces. Farmers were rarely content with the arrangement: complaints about how the private houses assigned a grade to a load, and about the price that followed from that grade, ran for decades, and in the 1920s they produced farmer-owned cooperative companies that came to hold much of the trade.
The end came from the rail line rather than from the building. Branch lines began to be abandoned in the 1970s, roads improved, farm trucks grew, and the grain companies built inland terminals of concrete and steel that could hold a hundred times what a wooden house held and load a train of a hundred cars in a day. A wooden elevator that no longer had a train to fill was a tax bill with a roof, and companies found it cheaper to pay for demolition than to maintain one. By the 2010s fewer than two hundred of the wooden houses were still standing.
A few have found second lives. Two or three are museums, one has been fitted out as a climbing gym, and several were sold to their own towns for a single dollar, after which the insurance turned out to cost a great deal more than the purchase. Heritage designation, where it exists, is usually provincial rather than federal. The argument made for keeping them is that they are the only building the prairie ever invented for itself and that a skyline without them is a skyline of nothing at all. Several communities have heard that argument at a public meeting and voted the other way.

The reason the buildings were placed at the intervals they were.
"Spaced roughly thirteen kilometres apart, which was as far as a loaded team of horses could travel and return between dawn and dusk." The statement asks for a reason, and B supplies the causal clause outright.
A is the paragraph about where an elevator stands and how far it can be seen: beside a siding, the only vertical thing for many kilometres. Distance and placement are both in A's vocabulary, which is enough to attract a scan. A never explains why one house sat thirteen kilometres from the next.
C is the paragraph about the geography changing: branch lines abandoned, better roads, bigger trucks. It explains why the old spacing stopped mattering, which is a close cousin of the question and not the question. Reason it existed, not reason it ended.
Museums, climbing gyms and public meetings. Nothing about siting.
Given, with its reason attached, in B.
A use found for one of the buildings that has nothing to do with farming.
"One has been fitted out as a climbing gym." The museums in the same sentence would also qualify, which is a useful reminder that a statement only needs one instance to be satisfied.
The real contender. C is the paragraph about what became of the buildings once the grain left, which is exactly the territory the statement seems to occupy. But everything C describes happening to them is a demolition contract. What C reports is the absence of any further use.
A describes what the building was for, in detail. Its only use in A is the one it was designed for, which is the opposite of what the statement wants.
Railways, spacing, counts and cooperatives. No repurposing anywhere.
Given in D, and named specifically enough that there is nothing to hesitate about.
A device that raises the grain so that it can then fall where it is needed.
"A leg, which is a moving belt fitted with cups, carries the grain to the peak of the building. From there it drops into whichever bin the operator has chosen." Lift once, then gravity, which A states as the whole idea of the building.
C is the other paragraph containing grain-handling structures and their capacities: inland terminals of concrete and steel that load a hundred cars in a day. Machinery is strongly implied throughout, and the numbers make it feel technical. No mechanism is ever described.
B is history and politics. The only physical thing in it is a team of horses.
Second lives and public meetings. The one piece of equipment implied is a climbing wall.
Given in A, and named: the leg.
A grievance that led producers to set up businesses of their own.
"Complaints about how the private houses assigned a grade to a load, and about the price that followed from that grade ... in the 1920s they produced farmer-owned cooperative companies." Grievance, then a company founded because of it, in one sentence. Note that the statement says producers and the passage says farmers, and neither uses the other's word.
The grain companies are physically present in A, painted on the side of every building along with the town's name. If you are hunting for companies, A has them in the first place you look. It has no grievance and no founding.
C is the other paragraph about grain companies and their commercial decisions, and about money: terminals, tax bills, demolition costs. Same actors, later era, and the companies in C are making choices rather than provoking anyone into founding a rival.
D has a disagreement in it: communities hearing an argument and voting the other way. So conflict lives in D as well. Nobody in D founds a business, and the quarrel is about heritage, not grading.
Given in B, cause and consequence both.
The average cost of demolishing one of the wooden elevators.
Search for the figure and it is not there. The passage tells you demolition happened, why it happened, and that it compared favourably with maintenance. It never says what it cost. Topic present, specific absent, which is the standard construction of an E statement.
C is the demolition paragraph and it is openly about cost: "companies found it cheaper to pay for demolition than to maintain one". The word cheaper is doing a great deal of work on your behalf, and it is a comparison, not a number. If the average existed it would live in C, which is exactly why C feels right.
D is the only paragraph in the passage with an actual dollar figure in it: elevators "sold to their own towns for a single dollar, after which the insurance turned out to cost a great deal more". A reader scanning for money and elevators together lands squarely here. It is a purchase price and an insurance bill, and neither is a demolition cost.
A has a capacity in bushels, B has a count and a distance. Both are full of numbers, none of which is a price for knocking a building down.
Two paragraphs here are about cost and one of them prints a dollar sign, so the pull toward the passage is strong from two directions at once. Name the specific fact, "average demolition cost", then look for that and only that. When the topic is everywhere and the number is nowhere, the answer is E and you can pick it without a wobble.
CELPIP reading tips and tricks for Part 3
Six habits that are worth marks on the paragraph matching part specifically, rather than the generic advice that fits any reading test ever written.
Give each paragraph a three-word label
"Plant. Old harvest. Machines and money. Threats and fixes." Sixty seconds, four labels, and now every statement can be routed to a shortlist of one or two before you read a word of the passage again.
Say the fact in your own words first
Turn "a feature of the seed that allows a bed to survive a bad season" into "seed that keeps until next year". You are translating out of the test writer's paraphrase and back toward the passage's plain meaning, which is where the answer is written.
Distrust the word you recognise
If a word from the statement leaps out of a paragraph, be more suspicious, not less. Shared vocabulary is rare between a statement and its true answer, and common between a statement and the paragraph planted to catch it.
Ask what the paragraph is doing
Two paragraphs can both be about harvesting and answer opposite statements, because one describes a method that leaves grain behind and the other a method that takes all of it. Topic is not enough. What is this paragraph asserting?
Bank the easy ones, then return
Some statements resolve in ten seconds. Take them, and spend the surplus on the two that fight you. With no order rule there is no cost at all to answering statement 7 before statement 3.
Answer every statement
Nothing is deducted for a wrong drop-down, so leaving one blank is a certain zero where a guess is one chance in five. Just do not let a guess wear the costume of a reasoned E.

Typically one of the nine, though you should never count on it. Treat E as a conclusion you reach after searching all four paragraphs for the specific fact, not as a quota to fill or a place to put the statement you ran out of time on.
Are the Part 3 statements in paragraph order?
No, and this is the biggest difference from Part 1. A statement about paragraph D can sit above a statement about paragraph A, and two statements in a row can point at the same paragraph. There is no order rule to ride, so every statement has to be resolved on its own.
Why can I not just match keywords in Part 3?
Because the statements are deliberately written without the paragraph's vocabulary. A paragraph saying seed lies dormant through the winter becomes a statement about a bed recovering from a bad year, with no word in common. Meanwhile a word from the statement often does appear, in the wrong paragraph, put there to catch keyword matching.
How long do I get for CELPIP Reading Part 3?
About 9 minutes for 9 statements, so roughly a minute each. The clock runs per part and does not carry over. A sensible budget is about a minute mapping the four paragraphs by topic, then around 50 seconds per statement, keeping the hardest one for last.
Does this practice course score my Part 3 answers?
