Reading Mock Test 14 is rated Hard. Nothing about the format changes: four parts, 38 questions, a clock per part. What changes is the density. Sentences carry more subordinate clauses, more facts arrive with a condition attached, and in Part 4 the people quoted are drawing opposite conclusions from a set of numbers nobody disputes.

What is in this reading test?

Part 1, Reading Correspondence is a letter to Hector from someone who since the ninth of February has been the owner, publisher, editor and Thursday delivery driver of the Miramichi Beacon: circulation one thousand nine hundred, established 1911, bought for considerably less than a going concern ought to cost. He has not decided whether that was the bargain of his life or the first clue.

Part 2, Reading to Apply a Diagram compares four residential snow-clearing contracts in Moose Jaw: Driveway Only at $395 a season, clearing at 10 cm or more and capped at twelve visits; Driveway and Walkway at $610, clearing at 8 cm within twelve hours but charging $40 each time for the ridge left by the city plough; a Per-Visit Call Out that costs nothing until you telephone and then $75 a visit; and Seasonal Premium at $1,150, clearing at 5 cm.

Part 3, Reading for Information is a passage on the Atlantic cod: four centuries of small-boat fishing, the two-year closure announced on the second of July 1992, a recovery that has been partial and slow in a way that surprised nearly everyone, and the shellfish fishery that replaced the cod.

Part 4, Reading for Viewpoints reports on Kinross Falls, which lost its mill and four hundred and ten jobs in 2016 and has since offered anyone who earns an income elsewhere, buys a house inside the municipal boundary and stays two years a total of $12,000, a desk in the old bank on Front Street, and a staff member to help them settle.

What makes this one hard

Three things. The snow-clearing diagram prices two of its four options in different units, so a straight comparison needs arithmetic before it needs judgement. The cod passage carries dates, tonnages and a policy timeline in prose, and Part 3 statements will move a fact from one decade into another. And Part 4 gives you a scheme that is working by one measure and failing by another, with people quoted on both, which is exactly the situation where a distractor is a true sentence in the wrong mouth.

Tips for this test

• In Part 2, convert everything to one unit before you compare. A per-visit price and a seasonal price are not comparable as printed.
• In Part 3, write the decade beside each paragraph. The cod passage spans four centuries and the statements will swap a date.
• In Part 4, separate what the scheme achieved from what people think it achieved. Only the second is examined.
• Do not slow down for unfamiliar words. Groundfish, moratorium and windrow are all defined by their context here.
• Twelve minutes on Part 4 is not much when the article is this long. Be reading it by minute twenty-eight of the section.
